About Guy's Lampworking
Guy's Lampworking Adventures started in the summer of 2004, when we lived in San Antonio, Texas. To escape the unbearable heat, I spent lots of days in the library (we both worked at night giving horse-drawn carriage tours through the downtown area). One day I was exploring the art section of the library, and while admiring the huge Chihuly sculpture in the main public library of San Antonio, I stumbled upon a book that would change our future: How to Make Glass Beads by Cindy Jenkins. I brought home about 20 other books on glass and other crafts but this was the book that hooked Guy's attention. Later that week, we tracked down the closest stained glass supply company and picked up a start-up lampworking kit from them. Guy was in love with melting the glass and used our spare bedroom for his studio.
After a very short period, Guy decided he needed a different torch that mixed oxygen and propane. He used a Hot Head Torch for about a month before he got very sick of it's noise and the nasty odor of the mapp gas. So off we drove to Blue Moon Glassworks in Austin, TX. Jim and Rose sold us a lovely Bobcat Torch by GTT and a Chili Pepper kiln - assuring us it would make Guy happy for years to come. And they were right! It's only recently that Guy purchased his second torch, a Hell Cat from Carlisle. This torch is bigger and badder than the Bobcat but he will always have much love for his little ol Bobcat. He still uses tanks of oxygen that get delivered to us and tanks of propane that he picks up at our local general store. I buy most glass for him from a variety of great Ebay stores and he has yet to try all of the colors available. He uses Moretti/Effetre rods most of the time but has played around with Lausha, Vetrofond, Bullseye and is now trying out Borosilicate.
